Louisville Alternative Energy

Savera Hamid
Anaerobic digestion is the natural collapse of organic materials into methane, carbon dioxide gas and fertilizer. This happens naturally, or in an anaerobic digester. One of these such machines was to be built in downtown Louisville, Kentucky. The plan was retracted, however, because of complaints from residents about an excess of traffic, odor, and some safety hazards. I agree with all of these concerns and believe that the anaerobic digester will bring more harm than good.
The first reason why the bio digester is a bad idea is because of the horrid smell it will produce all around downtown Louisville. There is already an issue with this because of the trash dumps and litter. Adding the bio digester with all its organic waste, wood chips, etc. would just create even more of an issue in keeping downtown Louisville clean and smelling pleasant. Furthermore, the smell could cause people to become sick. Lastly, the smell would also be a deterrent to tourists, many of whom go to Main Street and the surrounding areas for sightseeing the historical landmarks.

Another reason why the bio digester is a bad idea is because of the potential safety hazards. One safety concern is the releasing of methane gas into the air. It can become explosive when exposed to other chemicals in the air. Also, methane can displace oxygen, which is needed for breathing. Another safety hazard is the releasing of toxins which are bad for people, particularly infants and the elderly. Also, bio digesters tend to increase the rate of illness among people in that area.
Lastly, the bio digester is not a good idea because of the influx of traffic it will cause. Many trucks will have to drive into that area to bring in materials and such. The downtown area is already a traffic hub because many people drive to work there. This additional problem could prove very troublesome. Furthermore, the students will suffer because their buses might face delays and issues on the road.

In conclusion, the plan to construct an anaerobic digester in downtown Louisville was not a good one. It was smart to remove this aspect of construction in favor of the views of the locals. The people in this area would have become “guinea pigs” and been forced to bear the brunt of the negative aspects of the bio digester. The anaerobic digester would have caused odor, traffic, and posed safety hazards to the locals. Hopefully, another alternative energy source can be found without the cons of the bio digester.
